The University of Alabama in Huntsville has selectedBlue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama(BCBSAL) as our newStudent Health Insurance Plancarrier for the 2024-2025 plan year.
The Student Health Center encourages all students to have health insurance to help minimize the costs of their health care. UAH offers a new fully underwritten health insurance plan with BlueCross and BlueShield of Alabama. Eligible UAH students can voluntarily enroll in the health plan during the Open Enrollment windows listed below. For more information and to enroll, visit uah.myahpcare.com.
Open enrollmentfor the 2024-2025 academic year is active now for all eligible students:
- Domestic students, both undergraduate and graduate students,are eligible if they are enrolled in a minimum of nine semester hours in fall and spring or six semester hours in summer. They should live locally and not be in a fully online program.
- Graduate students on assistantshipmay choose to opt in to this plan and will subsequently be enrolled by their departments.They shouldnotenroll themselves.
- All international studentsare automatically enrolled in this insurance plan at registration. J1 Scholars are required to provide proof of comparable insurance or purchase this insurance plan.International students shouldnotenroll themselves.
- Eligible students who do enroll may also insure their dependents.Eligible dependentsare the student’s legal spouse and dependent children under 26 years of age.Eligible students are responsible for enrolling their dependents.
Academic HealthPlans (AHP)is the administrator that manages enrollment for BCBS. Please be on the lookout for emails fromAcademic HealthPlansto access your account to review the plan or enroll.

Is the University Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) required for all students?
No, the SHIP is optional for domestic students. There is no need to fill out a waiver.
* All International Students are automatically enrolled in this insurance plan at registration. J1 Exchange Visitors are required to provide proof of comparable insurance or purchase this insurance plan.
Who is Academic HealthPlans (AHP)?
Academic HealthPlans (AHP) is the administrator that manages enrollment for the BCBS Student Health Insurance Plan. Students should be on the lookout for emails from Academic HealthPlans for communication regarding how to access your account, to review the plan, or enroll. You may also visit https://uah.myahpcare.com/
Can I purchase the health insurance coverage for the full academic year?
Coverage must be purchased for one semester at a time, but Spring and Summer are purchased together. See Open Enrollment dates.
What if I start my classes at UAH in the Summer?
There is an option to purchase Summer health insurance coverage.
How do I enroll my spouse or dependents?
Once you log-in to your AHP account there will be an option for "I want to Enroll" button to add a plan for a dependent.
How do I get my insurance card?
Once you enroll and pay for coverage, AHP will send your information to BCBS for enrollment. You will get email confirmation from AHP when your coverage is active. You will also get a welcome email from BCBS with instructions on how to log-in to your BCBS account and obtain an electronic ID card. Be sure to use your A-number for your student ID.

Can I purchase Dental and/or Vision insurance?

I am a student athlete and need health insurance coverage. What do I need to do?

I have other questions regarding my current BCBS insurance plan, who do I contact?
If you are already enrolled in the BCBS plan and have questions or issues related to claims, ID cards, benefits, pre-authorization, or coverages please contact Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama at (866) 346-4585.
