Harold R. Hoyt, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 in Middletown. He was 84.
The son of the late Elsworth Hoyt and Madeline Umback Hoyt, he was born March 19, 1939 in Bellerose, NY. At a young age, the family relocated to Rock Hill where Harold married the love of his life, Wilma and raised their family. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years in 2019.
After serving in the US Army, Harold became a union carpenter and worked for over 50 years having led many building jobs in the county and surrounding area. He was an avid outdoorsman and volunteered for the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County. He was a mason in the Monticello Masonic Lodge, a precipitation observer for the US Government, and a major contributor to the Hackledam history project for the Unique Area State Park in Forestburgh. But his most beloved passion was the Rock Hill Fire Department. Harold was an active member of the Rock Hill Fire Department for 62 years, having held the positions of Chief and Commissioner.
He is survived by three children: Ricky Hoyt and his wife Althea of Leslie, Arkansas, Michael Hoyt and his wife Kandi of Rock Hill, and Kathy Jo Traphagen and her husband Thom of Briscoe; grandchildren: Alyssa and Anthony Freeman of Rock Hill, Brittany and Brendon Cunningham of Bethel, MichaeleAnn Hoyt and Cody Waizenegger of Middletown, and Rachael Hoyt and Ryan and Cindi Hoyt, of Arkansas; great grandchildren: Aryanna and Abigail Freeman, Owen, Brooke and Gavin Cunningham, Jax Hoyt and Abel Recer, and Ember and Nevaeh Hoyt; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and lifelong friends Butch Mitchell and Carl Kerber; as well as many other friends and his RHFD family. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers Ronald and Everett Hoyt.
Family & friends are invited to gather on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Rock Hill Firehouse, 61 Glen Wild Road in Rock Hill with firematic services starting at 7pm.
