Learn More About This Set of Coordinate Graphing Mystery Pictures

This free printable set of spring coordinate graphing mystery pictures includes 8 activities (plus terms of use page and answer keys).

The math + art worksheets are in black-and-white. The answers keys are in color.

There are 8 separate pages with directions for plotting out the points for the lines to make each image. The first page in the pack is a blank coordinate graph. You'll need to make 8 copies of this page (one for each spring mystery picture).

The spring themes (mystery pictures) include:

  • bee
  • ladybug
  • frog
  • flower
  • chick
  • rain cloud
  • bird
  • bunny

This graphing activity pack is a wonderful way to practice with coordinate pairs of whole numbers in four quadrants.

You'll find a coordinate graphing code with plot points (for example -5, 4) at the bottom of each spring coordinate graphing page. In this example, your student would move over from the center point (0,0) to the left to -5. Then, your student would move up 4, and mark the spot (otherwise known as plotting points).

This process continues for each line of the mystery picture. The images in this coordinate graphing set have the number of lines range from 6-15 lines.

Coordinate graphing activities are awesome. They're all about plotting points on a graph using x and y coordinates. It's like a treasure map where you mark points that help create shapes, lines, or even secret pictures. It's a fun way to explore math and unlock your creativity.
Khan Academy shares a helpful explanation of coordinate graphing with four quadrants.

What ages or grades can I use these coordinate graphing worksheets with?

Great question! I think it really depends on where your student is in their math education.
Coordinate graphing is typically first taught in 4th or 5th grade. My boys love this part of their math adventures. They think it's a lot like playing Battleship 💘
Ultimately, you know your kids best. You could give these activities a try and see how it goes. If your students get frustrated, hit the pause button and come back to it at a laster time.

What are some other ways that I can use these coordinate graphing activities with my students?

I encourage you to chat with your kids about their ideas. My boys enjoyed using the blank template to draw their own mystery pictures. Then, they made a graph of plot points for the lines. They presented their brothers with these new challenges and a had blast!

More Fun Ways to Learn About Coordinate Graphing

Would you like some clever ways to learn about coordinate graphing with your students? Sweet! It really is an amazing math activity!

Here are some creative ways to learn about and experience coordinate graphing:

  1. Art: Boost creativity by making images or designs using coordinate graphing. Your kids can create their own shapes or patterns by plotting points on a graph (with one or more quadrants of the coordinate plane). Brilliant way to build both math skills and artistic expression!
  2. Collaborative Projects: Engage students in projects where they work together to create a larger image using individual coordinate plots. This type of teamwork reinforces the importance of accuracy and teamwork in plotting coordinates. Or you can join in the fun with your child!
  3. Outdoor Learning Fun: Take your learning activities outside! Use sidewalk chalk to create a big coordinate grid and have students physically move to plot points, turning the learning process into an active and kinesthetic experience.
  4. Cross-Curricular Connections: Integrate coordinate graphing with other subjects like science or history. Perfect additions to your unit studies! For instance, plot coordinates to locate local, national, or historical landmarks on a map or plot coordinates in astronomy while learning about constellations.

How to do coordinate plane mystery picture? ›

Students will plot points on a coordinate plane using both positive and negative points . They will then connect the points to create a picture . Students can color and decorate their mystery picture to make it their own.

Which coordinate comes first? ›

The order in which you write x- and y-coordinates in an ordered pair is very important. The x-coordinate always comes first, followed by the y-coordinate. As you can see in the coordinate grid below, the ordered pairs (3,4) and (4,3) are two different points!

Ordered pairs are written in parentheses (x-coordinate, y-coordinate). The origin is located at (0,0). Note that coordinates are often written with no space after the comma. The location of (2,5) is shown on the coordinate grid below.

How do you write XY coordinates? ›

In the Cartesian coordinate system, the x and y coordinates are part of the x-axis and y-axis in a 2D space. For a point in space, the x and y coordinates are written as an ordered pair, (x, y). The first number represents the point's position on the x-axis, and the second number represents its position on the y-axis.

How do you graph XY on a graph? ›

To graph an equation, first, construct a table having two columns for values of x and y by substituting the values of x and y in the equation starting from 0. Then draw the points on the graph where the values of x lie on the x-axis and the corresponding values of y lie on the y-axis.

How do you graph a function with coordinates? ›

How to Graph a Function: Example #2 (Quadratic Function)
