Critics Consensus

A likable cast and charming concept couldn't save 3rd Rock from the Sun from the critics, but it would later prove to be more than a Mork and Mindy knockoff.

3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) David Bianculli New York Daily News I'd love to recommend this show unreservedly but until its scripts improve a notch, it's more like an extended sketch, and I find myself caught between a "Rock" and a hard place. May 3, 2018 Full Review 3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Caryn James New York Times The cast deserves more consistently funny material. Even extraterrestrials shouldn't have to work this hard for laughs. May 3, 2018 Full Review 3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Steve Johnson Chicago Tribune If you can get past the sense that somebody wrote much of this with a Victoria's Secret catalog close at hand, there's actually a charming and perceptive comedy lurking inside, a neat counterpoint to all those series about urbanites on the make. May 3, 2018 Full Review 3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Intelligently written and well acted, 3rd Rock generates lots of laughs as viewers look at humanity through the aliens' unique point of view. Rated: 4/5 May 4, 2018 Full Review 3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Chris Kaltenbach Baltimore Sun There have been worse shows on television, maybe worse shows from even more unexpected sources. But it's hard to imagine. May 3, 2018 Full Review 3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Scott D. Pierce Deseret News (Salt Lake City) Sadly, Lithgow - one of our finer actors - is often reduced to over-the-top, scenery-chewing histrionics in "3rd Rock." If he isn't embarrassed by this show and his performance in it, he ought to be. May 3, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

LR B '3rd Rock From The Sun' is another highly enjoyable late 90s/early 00s sitcom from a golden era for TV comedy. If Friends was the most trendy, Seinfeld the sharpest and Frasier the most 'farcical' then 3rd Rock was the most OTT.The superb John Lithgow leads the way, making Dick Solomon (the head of the alien 'family') the figurehead, and it's curious that John Cleese and William Shatner would be recurring guests - the frantic, hysterical behaviour of Dick echoes Basil Fawlty (and the family being a quartet, like Basil, Sybil, Manuel and Polly) whilst Shatner's self-mocking appearances tap into Kirk and co trying to 'fit in' on 1980s Earth in the highly-regarded Star Trek IV.Much of the comedy revolves around the aliens attempting to adapt and learn (to mixed results) - not just to Earth customs but within the bodies they inhabit. Dick is the oldest-looking but the youngest alien, and struggles to show mature leadership. The once-assertive Security Officer Sally tries to be feminine but more often just seems outright aggressive, the adolescent Tommy is actually the oldest and brightest of the aliens (to Dick's chagrin) whilst Harry, derided as the idiot, increasingly seems to be the most talented and confident.Whether you like the sitcom or not will come down to whether you like its broad playing and often shrill tone (the late Jan Hooks as Vicki Dubcek and French Stewart as Harry Solomon are arguably the most mannered of the troupe, few of whom hold back), and its mix of Seinfeld-style observations on the mundane, slapstick/pratfalls and social faux pas. However the chemistry between the cast is excellent, the experienced Wayne Knight (also on Seinfeld) adds an extra dimension as the cowardly but pragmatic Officer Don, and the pairing of Dick/Mary Allbright works superbly, with Jane Curtin always bringing the best out of Lithgow: the couple's on-off middle-aged relationship giving a depth to an often frantic show. The last season suffers from the partial absence of the blossoming Gordon-Levitt (Tommy) and a feeling the idea was running out of steam and ideas, but it's still worth a look. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Good show with a fun premise. Watching the wacky characters try to navigate life on Earth puts a smile on your face. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This show is pretty quirky but it's funny I enjoyed watching it. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member First off let me just start by saying DO NOT PAY MOST OF THE CRITICS ANY MIND, most of them are the same species of one bird that all flock together! SECOND I am extremely picky about what I watch on teleLIEvision, this show is BY FAR one of my most favorite shows! John Lithgow, as well as the entire cast, are so unbelievably amazing together. and uplifting to watch! Between the traditional (Carol Brunette, and abbot Castello i.e) type of slapstick comedy, also the oddly adorable and charming naiveté, exudes the writers' imagination of what it really would be like for aliens to assume human identities sent to Earth for human observation. This show is appropriate for most ages (Teens and up). I WOULD if I could give this show 10 out of 5 stars. It's definitely worth watching! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the funniest sitcoms ever. Great acting, cast, punchlines, physical comedy, premise and no lame moral storylines. 42 percent from critics 85 percent from audience. Professional critics are clearly useless/out of touch/paid/biased Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member the greatest comedy tv series ever made Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
